Our popular Beat Lab, led from the start by CalArts alumnus and musician extraordinaire Alfredo Miranda, worked hard this last Spring to create original music (7 new track in total!!) for our third Valle del Oro Community Festival in May of this year. The kids are veritable beat masters and have started adopting DJ names and, yes, a fan base! This year the lab collaborated with CalArts Graduate student and remarkable writer Sonal and the Creative Writing Lab students. The DJs worked to create music pieces that included excerpts of interviews the youth had recorded with residents around the neighborhood. The group came up with a series of questions to guide their creative process and focus their improvisation and interviewing. The tracks that resulted from this project were a huge success at the community festival!
